The Cults: "Calcified Catholicism"

Editor’s Note: This is the last in our series of articles in “winding down” our blog.  Prehaps we may post again (we’ll certainly let you know if we do); but for now, we are thinking that "this is it."  In our previous articles, we’ve tried to summarize most of the major problems characterizing the SGG cult; and this last article continues in that vein, recounting some more of the "highlights" of what the cult-masters have done. To that end, we hope that we have “covered most of the ground.”

The “bottom line” on all this is that the cult-masters have shown, over and over again, that they are not Catholic, but self-serving parasites who are out to materially profit at the expense of gullible followers – who tell people what they want to hear, then proceed to exploit them in every which way that they can.   They are hirelings, not shepherds – costumed con men who need to be put out of business.  Period.

That said, we present our final article…

The great Catholic historian Hilaire Belloc once remarked that the Catholic Church in the late Middle Ages suffered from what he called “calcification.”  By that, he meant that it had grown rich, jaded, and materialistic, and that “rites and rubrics” – the "mechanics" of Catholicism – often took precedence over its principles.  What this led to were evils such as Lay Investiture, Simony, and the selling of indulgences – evils that ultimately precipitated the Protestant Revolt.

Does this sound familiar?  Well, it should, because that is precisely what is happening in Tradistan today -- and what has been for some time: the cult-masters are giving us the mechanics, but not the Catholicism.  But today’s “calcification” is something more than that.  It is actually worse, because it is actually devoid of Catholicism.  The Church in the late Middle Ages was at least united – and true.  Today’s Tradistan is a disjointed mishmash of sectarian cults, all fighting with one another, and each making up its own “articles of faith” and its own sectarian “rules.”

Dannie Dolan’s SGG and Not-so-big Don Sanborn’s MHT are Tradistan’s two arch-typical examples of this.  As we’ve pointed out so many times in the past, Dannie is all about “the show”; and the Donster is all about hellfire and brimstone (and bullying).  Dannie’s penchant for ostentation is so glaringly apparent that it’s almost comical.  Look at any of SGG’s bulletins (and especially Dannie’s ’Corner), and you’ll find it crammed full of Dannie’s trademark “S&S” (Syrup and Sanctimony), along with other examples of his empty, meaningless “holy-speak.”

And click on SGG’s bulletin any given Sunday, and you’ll find full-color pictures (and sometimes even videos) from one of SGG’s latest extravaganzas – this past Corpus Christi, for instance (click here).  That particular bulletin has a video of Dannie giving his “pontifical blessing” -- which he has even put on YouTube, the ultimate cyber venue for sleazy self-promotion.  (Only Dannie would ever dream of putting on such a pretentious display of pomposity.)  But such tawdry, self-promotional frippery is what Dannie is all about – ALL about.

All of this ecclesiastical pageantry, of course, is designed to dazzle and impress: his over-the-top Episcopal attire, the billowing clouds of incense (that have sometimes been known to trip SGG’s smoke alarm), the seemingly endless retinue of servers and torch-bearers, the bell-ringing – you name it.  It is “the Full Monty” – a perfect latter-day example of Belloc’s “calcified Catholicism.”  But, as we said before, none of it is real.  It’s more like a cardboard mockup, a façade, a Hollywood stage set – an ornamental stage production.

It is, again, the “mechanics” of Catholicism – elaborately detailed rites, rubrics, and rituals – but totally devoid of its “spirit,” i.e., of Catholic principles and precepts.  What the public sees on SGG's website are all its pomp and pageantry, but not the sordid side: the brutality that went on at SGG’s “school,” the blatantly immoral behavior of the school principal’s sons – and Dannie’s condoning of it all.  Nor have they ever seen (or ever will see) any retraction from him and Tony of what these depraved wretches said about Schiavo.  Such things are kept out of the limelight, because they don’t fit SGG’s “business model.”

And business model is just what it is.  Dannie doesn’t really believe in any of this holy-speak drivel that he perpetually puts out; he does it only because it’s “good for business”: it gets his Gerties to donate.  That is, it’s all about money.  His (and Tony’s) “una cum” nonsense, for instance: they really don’t care about that one way or the other.  But it is a good business strategy: if they can convince people that this is something necessary for "being Catholic” – they’ll use this (and other such invented “articles of faith”) to keep their sheep in the pen (and from defecting to other pens) – because “more sheep” equals more money.

And, over the years, Dannie and Tony have exploited their Gerties in every way imaginable, guilt-tripping them into donating both their money and their talents to the cult center.  Everything at SGG is geared not for saving souls, but for Dannie and Tony’s comfort – and for emptying wallets.  Not a week goes by when Dannie and Tony are not begging for money, and they have devised myriad ways to get it. And while asking the Gerties to “sacrifice” and to “offer it up,” Dannie and Tony "reciprocate" by routinely going on “apostolates” that are nothing more than mid-winter vacation getaways to warm, sunny destinations.

And, in addition to that, they have suckered the Gerties into paying for a new facility they neither needed nor wanted – and then asked them for help in paying its “high heating bills” (when this new, “energy efficient” facility turned out not to be so “energy efficient”). (This new facility, by the way, includes a school that largely stands vacant, and a “grotto” that has had to be repaired and restocked with fish several times.)  And now (as we reported in our last article -- click here), their “new facility” is prematurely falling apart -- and in need of all sorts of repairs.

Meanwhile, Dannie and Tony run this crumbling enterprise as if they were “popes” (which, of course, they aren’t): issuing phony “dispensations,” granting phony “indulgences,” and denying people sacraments at will (none of which they have the authority to do), applying “rules” that they themselves don’t follow, and/or applying them “selectively.”  These renegades, answerable and accountable to no one, just “make it up as they go along” – and expect their Gerties to blindly obey all their decrees and directives.

This is the kind of “calcified Catholicism” that has come to epitomize SGG – and that goes on there day in and day out. We and Pistrina Liturgica have done our best to expose it and to combat it; and we think that we’ve reached “the right audience” in doing so: both attendance and revenue at SGG are down -- and continue to decline.  And, although we’ll never be able to reach and convince the “hard core” there, we think that the cult’s malignant influence has been effectively “checked” -- which is why we have decided to "wind down" our blog.  But, although we are winding it down, all that we have written to date – as we said before -- will remain intact, as a permanent reminder (and warning) for people to stay away from these malignant parasites.

Will we ever be able to shut the cult-masters down completely?  No.  There will always be enough hopelessly gullible there to at least keep them “on life support.” But if we can keep them in check – keep them from growing – that will be “enough.”  And, so far, we’ve been able to do just that.  Thanks mainly to Pistrina Liturgica’s untiring efforts in exposing the myth of Dannie and Tony as “scholars” and “liturgical experts,” for instance, anyone with an ounce of common sense now sees them for the pathetic know-nothings that they are; and both PL and we have done a thorough job of uncovering their skullduggery and deceit.  And, in the main, our efforts have worked.

But this is an ongoing process – and one that cannot totally depend just on what's printed in two blogs.  That is why we repeat what we've said many times in the past: that word must be spread – and this can only be done by followers -- by “apostles” – and you are our “apostles.”  By documenting what the cult-masters have done, we have made the information available; but, again, it is up to you to disseminate it.  As Catholics, we have a moral duty to do so – to actively oppose evil when we can.  To invoke once again Pope St. Felix III’s words, Not to oppose error is to approve it; and not to defend truth is to suppress it; and indeed to neglect to confound evil men, when we can do it, is no less a sin than to encourage them.”  Or, as Edmund Burke even more succinctly put it, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

That is the key: good men must do something.  Blogs like ours (and Pistrina Liturgica) have made the truth about SGG and MHT available; that is the “something” that we have done.  But that is the limit of what we can do.  The “something” that you, our readers, can do -- to reiterate -- is to spread that word.  It’s not enough just to say that one “disapproves” of them – and it is certainly not enough to say, “Oh, I go there; but I only go there for the sacraments; however, I do not support them.”  These are both “cop-outs.”  Besides, “not supporting the cults” may hold them in check, but only active opposition will deliver the “knockout blow.”  And, you can deliver that knockout blow by, again, being an “apostle” and spreading the word.  It may not be easy – but it’s not impossible either.

Some parting words:  As we said in a previous post, this blog, although “finished,” won't be going away.  Whatever has been written date will remain intact, to serve as a standing warning against the cult-masters.  We will also check our blog every now and then for comments, and respond to them as needed.  And will we ever start our blog up again?  Some of our readers have sent in comments suggesting that we do, but perhaps on a more infrequent basis – monthly or quarterly, for example.  Well, anything’s possible.  But, practically speaking, we think we've said just about everything there is to say about the cult-masters – and that this is “enough.”

Besides, since so much of the damning evidence against the cult-masters has come from their own lips, how much more is really needed?  If that isn’t “enough,” then what is -- and what more can one say?  We feel that we have accomplished our mission, and have made a convincing enough case.  We have, we believe, done our very best to put Pope Felix’s words of into action.  In short, we believe that we have “done our part”; and we can rest easy, knowing that we have done it.

We also think that many of you, our readers, have "done your part" -- and for that, we sincerely thank you.  But it will take your continued help and vigilance to put these charlatans completely out of business -- and get rid of their counterfeit Catholicism once and for all.  Let's make that happen.

  1. Pretty funny how the anons come out to say should be an open forum where the cult masters can respond, when they do respond week after week w/dead animal 'joke' stories, w/more begging for money, w/more callous treatment of their staff and congregation. I thank you all for what you have done these last ten years and that you are leaving blog up at your own expense so others can know the truth. Would do a monthly round up until Dolan & Cekada (both 67) sell the valuable land underneath the crumbling cult center and ride off to their NM resort w/their ill-gotten loot. Sure the cultlings and the staff will be the last to know.

    1. Yes, it’s actually hilarious how these anons talk about an “open forum” and “letting the other side be heard,” when their cult-master heroes are the epitome of close-minded intolerance. People have been escorted off the property and/or banned from the property by police order for disagreeing with the cult-masters (and even for defending those who have been victimized by them). The cult-masters also feel free to tell slanderous lies about innocent people (like Abbot Leonard Giardina and Bernie Brueggemann); yet when indisputable facts are brought to light about them, they cry foul. The cult-masters are about as tolerant as Josef Stalin.

We thank you for your kind words of support. And, yes, although we won’t be writing anything new (at least for the foreseeable future), we’ll be leaving our blog up indefinitely. We realized over time that we have actually accomplished our mission: SGG is no longer a “Midwest Mecca,” but an ineffectual backwater; and Brooksville has become a totally insular and inbred nonentity. We realize that we have reached the “right” audience, but that we will never reach the “wrong” audience -- the hard core cultists -- so why wasted any more of our time on them?

And “hard core” they are. For instance, after we responded to the empty rhetoric of the idiot who bade us “good riddance” (Anon. 3:36 PM), he replied with this even more childish bit of nonsense: “Good riddance to you, you purveyor of festering cow excrement.” How does one deal with mindsets such as that? [BTW, we didn’t want to pay him the compliment of responding to him directly; but we did want to mentioned it, just to show people what kind of nitwits the cult-masters have for supporters.]

As you pointed out, although we won’t be posting any new articles, we will be keeping our blog open (along with all that has been written to date). This way, the “existing word” will always remain out there for the “right” audience (who don’t need any more “convincing”) – without us having to waste any more of our time writing new material trying to convince the “wrong” audience (the “hard core” cultists who will never be convinced).

However, if we happen to get any “new intelligence” that is particularly damaging to the cult-masters, we just might post it. So, “stay tuned.”

  2. I have to wonder whether the cult masters actually had any zeal once. You know that love for souls that motivated all sorts of priests to their vocation. I will concede that maybe they did-once. Their real zeal is for sedevacantism. I am not putting down sedevacantism or sedevacantists when I say this. Many good sedevacantists exist but in any barrel you are bound to have a couple of rotten apples like the cultmasters. The whole thesis sort of is the lynchpin for their existence and behavior.

If there's no authority then we can do whatever we want goshdarnit! And so they do. Again I'm just trying to provide an explanation as to why they do what they do.

    1. From what we’ve gathered from various sources throughout the years, the only “zeal” that people like Dolan, Cekada, and Sanborn ever had was for their own material goals and gain. And their espousal of things like “sedevacantism” was not because they believed in it, but because it’s a good marketing strategy. The cult-masters needed a way to convince people that their “product” was better than anyone else’s, so they invented things like “sedevacantism” to “differentiate” themselves from others. They decreed, for instance, that “una cum” made a Mass invalid. It does not – nor do they have the authority to say that it does. (If a person wants to be a sedevacantist, so be it -- but being a sedevacantist CANNOT be used as a criterion for being Catholic.)

Whether people like Dannie started out “with good intentions” is debatable; but what is not debatable is that their intentions now are NOT good. They have demonstrated over and over again that they have absolutely no respect for true Catholic principles. So, whether sedevacantism is “real” or not is a moot point. These imposters are NOT real. They are phonies. They are not a “viable alternative” for Catholics, but costumed con men taking advantage of people’s credulity to manipulate and exploit them for their own material gain. They are a pestilence that needs to be stamped out.

  3. Its wonderful you all have let go of this 10 year old debacle.
I don't know anyone involved but it was sad to see the subsequent fall out on all sides.
God bless & best of luck in the future.

    1. We really haven’t so much “let go”; we are merely not adding any more to what’s already been said -- at least for now. We feel that we’ve already said “enough” – at least to convince sensible people that cults such as SGG and MHT are not Catholic. And we think we have succeeded: SGG and MHT are not growing, either demographically or financially. The number of people in the congregation has never returned to pre-2009 levels; and weekly collections -- often $7000 or more back then – now average little more than $4000. (Collections for the last four Sundays were $4165, $3236, $4898, and $4070, respectively. And this past week’s collection was an incredibly anemic $2746.) When one takes into account the inflation that has occurred since 2009, that drop in revenue is even more significant.

Therefore, we think that our message has reached “the right audience,” and that we have effectively “checkmated” these parasites -- and hence can now move on to be doing better things with our time. That said, however, we will continue to monitor what’s going on at the cult centers. And if anything “significant” happens or develops there, we may once again take up our pen and report it – especially if there’s a chance it can enlighten some of the poor, wretched souls who are still hoodwinked by vermin like Dolan, Cekada, and Sanborn.

  4. Hello Watcher
Thank you so much for all your info over the last few years. We were one family that left SGG several years before 2009.Now attend SSPX over in Walton.

Any idea when PL site will up and running again.

It would be good if someone could start up a site on CMRI.In your view they are as bad as SGG/MHTS?

    Prayers for you.

    1. Thank you for your supportive words. Yes, many people have left SGG over the years. You were smart to get out early when you did. It took a major scandal (2009) to get the majority to leave; and, as for those who still remain, that is a complete mystery to us. It is so obvious that Dolan and Cekada are out for money alone (and that they’re both as phony as the proverbial “three dollar bill”). One wonders where these people’s minds are. That is the main reason why we (and PL) discontinued adding any new articles to our blog. If fact-based evidence can’t budge them, then what can?

The good news is that SGG and MHT are not growing – and that’s the most important thing. Someday, the whole truth will come out about Dolan and Cekada – and that it will be devastating for those poor wretches there who still swallow the SGG swill. And you’re right: CMRI is just as bad: Pivvy is just another self-seeking mini-empire builder, doing whatever he pleases (and answerable to no one). It’s a shame that someone more “in the know” than we did not start a blog about him.

As far as PL (writing anything new) is concerned, we doubt if they’ll do anything from here on. The “consultancy apostolate” that they mentioned in their last post has panned out into even more. As a result, they have informed us that they’re “done” with trying to convince the remaining brain-dead at SGG, and have moved on to more important things with their time. (It is a shame, however: we (as well as many others) enjoyed reading them. They were most informative (and entertaining!). We will miss their wit – and their superior knowledge.

In closing, let me say that any “traditional” groups that have left the mainstream Church – and they HAVE left it -- are basically “dead-end streets.” They are renegade entities with ZERO authority or jurisdiction, answerable and accountable to no one, who just “make it up as they go along.” And the fact that they are not answerable to anyone makes them susceptible to degenerating into self-serving, materialistic mini-despots like Dolan, Sanborn, and Pivarunas. Until they have the humility to submit to higher authority (and the discipline that goes along with it), they are, again, “dead-end streets.”

  5. Excellent words Watcher.Another family that left SGG years ago.We moved out of Ohio and have not looked back. All SGG writings, etc of these evil men went in the garbage.

One issue that we don't think you spoke too much on and that is the major issue with the Thuc line.Mr Derkson can write as many pages as he likes but there is still no strong evidence that Thuc went through the whole rite and even if he knew what he was doing.Have you noted all the evil "clerics" in the sede movement have their "orders" from this doubtful line. The SSPX/FSSP have you re-confirmed if you have been "confirmed" by a Thuc bishop.

Yes,we pray that the whole truth about Cekada/Dolan/Pivarunas/Sanborn will come out soon.

    1. As far as the Thuc lineage is concerned, we have not said anything about that simply because we are not knowledgeable enough about it (one way or the other) to comment. However, the prudent thing to do (when one has a doubtful lineage) is to procure multiple lineages (to remove that doubt). (It’s a simple enough – and painless enough -- thing to do.) But, of course, Dannie Dolan (and several other “Thuc clergy”) won’t bother to do this – because they’re too proud (just as Dannie is too proud to get his “one-handed” orders fixed).

  6. Another ex cult member here. I will have to say that I understand why both sites are leaving these men behind.....there is nothing more you could say to get people who refuse to listen to the truth away from those places. I am glad that you both had websites to expose them because I think they want anyone who leaves to believe that they must be crazy.

Another fact I would like to note is that both places you discuss had scandals going on right under the leaders’ noses. Sanborn had the priest who got a parishioner pregnant and was relieved when she had an abortion. Dolan had the issue with his school watching child pornography and having abuse going on right around him. In both instances, the ones in charge acted as though they were in the right somehow. It must be the victims fault.

Do you wonder what else is going on under their noses? I can say it’s a lot worse than anyone has ever discussed on these sites. It’s a shame that their churches still exist.

    1. Yeah, it's a shame we can't say what we know (but don't have solid "proof"). One day the whole truth will "out" -- and Dannie, Tony, and the Donster will not only be "toast" (Cekada's favorite word), but will be veritable "carbon footprints."

  7. We know where you are coming from Watcher.I am a young lady who left SGG some years ago."don't have solid proof)Among those of us who left it's common knowledge what you are referring to regarding Tony and Danielle. The recent health problems with Tony should tell you as that is a common health problem with you know who types.I should know as I work as a nurse.

    1. Yes, we are aware that it’s been “common knowledge” for years – and even amongst those who staunchly support the “dynamic duo”; but, without positive, documented proof, we can say nothing publicly about it. And yes, we are well aware of Pivvy’s official “silence” on all the goings on there. (And, yes, we draw the same conclusions that you do.) These men –.Dannie, Tony, Pivvy, and the Donster – have much to answer for. And those “supporters” of theirs who know the truth, but choose to suppress it) have perhaps even more to answer for.

One day, they will all answer to God for what they have done (or “covered up”) – and that will be a terrible day for them. (BTW, thanks for pointing out the “significance” of Tony’s recent “health problems.” We were not aware of that.)

    1. I’m not sure how many are still there, but it’s far below their pre-2009 level. The only reason (that I can fathom) why there are people still there is that Dannie and Tony tell them what they want to hear: platitudes, sanctimonious pap, and “Catholic” buzzwords and phrases. Just read Dannie’s ‘’Corner any given Sunday. One iimmediately recognizes Dannie’s writing: it’s wall-to-wall sugary “holy-speak” – and the SGG fools fall for it. (It’s really ironic too; in his seminary days, “a certain seminarian’s” language would often make a sailor blush!)

And you are right in calling them evil men. They are evil; and they will pay for their deeds a long time after they meet their maker – perhaps for eternity.

Our prediction is that Not-so-gig Don’s “seminary” will never materialize, because the Selway family wants its money to go for Joey personally (not for Redundant Don), and for a convent for their priory princesses (several of whom are Selway daughters). Now that Joey is “bishop,” Not-so-big Don is surplus.

We, by the way, will never take our blog down. It’ll remain here as a permanent reminder (and warning) about the cult masters and their evil ways.

Did you notice how well fed Pivy looks just like Dolan and Cekada. One family we know who once had a son at Pivys "Academy" would come home sick and looking underfed. They did not send him back. This boy siad he knew Pivy was eating other food in private as there is no way you would put that weight on with what was being served on the table in the basement of the Omaha church.

What a rotten group Pivy,Sanborn,Dolan and Cekada are.

  23. Judging by your articles you folk must have a long history with SGG.Were you there back in 1989 when the spilt happened between Father Jenkins and Dolan?

What was the background on a certain sister Mary Cabirini?Do you know the reasons why the then Father Kelly expelled her from Roundtop?

  24. Yes, several of us were there in 1989. Unfortunately, we cannot publish the full reasons for the Dolan/Jenkins split. Let us just say that Fr. Jenkins had good reasons for splitting with Dannie – and he was totally justified in doing so. Also, this writer does not have the background about Sr. Mary Cabrini, and can therefore not comment on that. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us.

  25. Although we haven’t (for some time now) been printing any more articles, we do “keep track of what’s going on at SGG,” i.e., by reading Dannie’s bulletin every week – especially his ‘Corner. As usual, Dannie’s ’Corner is chuck full of his trademark “S&S” (Syrup & Sanctimony). And sandwiched in between all that fluff are often the not-so-subtle hints at airing all his grievances and his angsts, and also the dropping of his never-ending hints about poor attendance and inadequate donations. His August 18, 2019 ’Corner was a perfect example of this. It was all this and more..

In this latest ’Corner,, we really had a good laugh: in addition to Dannie’s usual drivel, this one highlighted (once again) SGG’s “critter infestation” problems -- this time, it’s (once again) mice infestation. Remember when a mouse got into the refrigerator in SGG’s kitchen? (Yes, the refrigerator! How in the heck does a mouse get into a refrigerator??) Well, this time, even the lady’s room got infested! Notice too, that Dannie reported (once again) that the grotto had to be fixed – yes, again! (More evidence that SGG’s infrastructure is prematurely going to rack and ruin.)

Thirdly, Dannie felt compelled to mention (speaking of mice) that “we are no longer poor as church mice.” No longer? He attributed this newfound(?) “abundance” to the generosity of what Tony tagged SGG’s “solid core congregation which tithes regularly and conscientiously” – or, as we’ve tagged them, the “brain-dead hard core” who give “no matter what.” (Actually, Dannie & Co. are still “as poor as church mice.” They’ve been that way since 2009 – when half the congregation left in protest – and SGG has never recovered since.)

Note also that Dannie got in some “guilt-tripping” about those “floaters” who come but don’t contribute “their share.” Dannie finished this by saying that God will reward the givers, and “He will judge the rest.” (Thank you, Dannie, for that not-so-subtle morsel of guilt-tripping!)

All of the foregoing confirms and reinforces what we’ve said all along about SGG: that it’s a cult run by con men, that its infrastructure is falling apart, and that only the hard-core brain-dead are still falling for Dannie’s S&S -- and supporting him. All of the intelligent parishioners have long since left SGG, and/or are no longer materially supporting it. They see Dannie & Co. for what they are. Only the hard-core zombies remain.

We could have expanded this comment into a full-blown article. (We almost have!) But we’ve stopped short, for we feel that we’ve given more than enough evidence of the cult-center’s fraudulence. At the same time, however, we felt compelled to mention – yet one more time -- this latest example illuminating Dannie’s sleazy modus operandi – to demonstrate one more time that “tiger Dannie” has not “changed his stripes.” Who knows, though? Maybe, this time around, even the hard-core brain-dead will “change THEIR stripes,” wake up, and leave the cult!
